Our Curriculum
Curiosity Accredited Early Years setting
As Early years practitioners we have a passion for providing children with the best possible start. Through the Curiosity Approach we work hard to create an environment that promotes awe, wonder and curiosity through the use of authentic and natural resources. It is a wonderful mix of Reggio, Montessori, Steiner and Hygee methodology that will help promote and widen experiences for our children. We see our children as the 'thinkers and doers of the future' and are proud to be the only school accredited setting in the North of England.
In Reception, children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage. This is made up of key areas of learning. The Prime Areas - Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development. Children also learn to develop their Literacy, Maths, Creative skills and Understanding of the world through hands on practical activities and small group sessions. Play is at the heart of all we do and we value the learning environment as a way for children to develop and steer their learning, curiosity, independence and resilience. Your child's class teacher and support staff track your child closely throughout the year and measure their progress against age related levels.
Me and My World
Through this topic we learn about what makes us special, our talents, emotions, body parts and senses. We explore where we live and compare our toys with those in the past.
Celebrations
Get ready to celebrate!! A multi-cultural look at celebrations across the world exploring and how and why people celebrate special times and comparing them to our own experiences.
Food
Through stories and books we learn about our own favourite food, how food arrives on our plate, differences in our own food and that of other cultures. We explore how to have a healthy diet and lifestyle as well as testing out and making recipes. We visit a restaurant to have a meal with our friends.
Our Natural World
Reception are globe trotters. Come with us as we travel around the world exploring the animals, habitats, and life in other countries. We look at how to look after our environment as well as comparing life in other countries to that of our own.
Oh I Do like to be beside the seaside!
With the changing seasons we explore all the joy that summer brings! We begin by exploring different forms of transport and how holidays and travel have changed over time! The children explore our role play ice-cream parlour and have lots of fun getting stuck into map making, exploring environments that differ from their own. We end our topic with a seaside visit to Filey where we taste real seaside ice-cream!
RWI
Within school, we follow RWI as our phonics and reading scheme. Children learn to read and identify sounds. RWI teaches children to read accurately, fluently and with understanding, to spell, and to write their own compositions. Tailored sessions take place daily alongside Writing for Pleasure where we focus on being authors and even publishing our own books.
Maths
Children learn to read, recognise, and order numbers to 10 as well as understanding the composition of numbers. We explore subitising, doubling, sharing and number bonds to 10 through fun, practical sessions. We support children to develop mathematical vocabulary and to develop skills as mathematicians.
Our Interactions
Within Early Years, interacting with young children is at the heart of our daily practice and a vital part of our teaching and learning. Interactions are profoundly important for supporting and extending learning.

In Nursery and Reception we are trained to use the Wait, Watch, Wonder method of interacting. This is based upon the research and evidence of Julie Fisher.
- Wait – reminds the practitioner to start by doing nothing but being respectful of the learning and activity that is already happening.
- Watch – allows the practitioner to understand the intent and purpose of the activity and whether it is the right time to intervene
- Wonder – allows time for the practitioner to ponder on what exactly the child is trying to achieve or how to stimulate them further
PE days
We will begin PE lessons after October half term
The children should come to school in their PE kits and they will remain in their kits all day. Please remember that school PE kit consists of plain black shorts or track suit bottoms, white t-shirt and black zip up top.
Class Dojo
We use class dojo to share photographs, learning, announcements and information. It is a fantastic way to keep up to date with all things Reception. Please make sure you are signed up using your unique code.
